Justin Fone - Vandal Turned Videographer

What happens to a graffiti artist when he decides to retire and put the spray can down? For many former graffiti artists, the profession of choice is body tattooing or graphic design. For San Francisco based video artist Justin Fone, pursuing a career in digital video and film production became his new creative outlet.
“Growing up in my early adolescence, I gravitated towards the graffiti art scene. Something about it just caught my eye. The vibrant colors, the imaginative designs, the adrenaline rush. For an insecure teenage boy filled with energy, graffiti was the answer. I was heavily active in the scene for many years. Anytime my friends and I went painting, I documented all of our work on my dad’s old 8mm video camera. It was just always one of those things that I did. I would capture our metamorphosis on video, and we would rush home turn on the television and relive the moment all over again. It was awesome!”
Later on in life, while attending the University of California at Berkeley, Justin searched for an artistic way to channel his creative energy. Reluctantly, Justin entered the film department. “I’d always thought that I would be studying graphic design or architecture in college. I never really considered getting into film. As I casually sat through a couple of film classes, I became hooked. To me, film is a very powerful medium just like graffiti is in the sense that you can convey your message to a crowd within a large scale highly artistic format.”
Justin’s passion for life and films lead him to pursue wedding and special events videography. Inspired by the unique personal stories of his clients, Justin creates timeless pieces of art. Founded in 2001, Justin Fone Productions specializes in filming not only weddings and special events in near and faraway places such as the Caribbean, Europe, and Southeast Asia, but also corporate events for clients such as Diageo, Oracle, and The Children's Foundation. His work is regularly featured in print magazine publications such as 7x7 Magazine, Grace Ormonde, The Knot, Today’s Bride, and on television network cable channels such as Comcast, Lifetime, MSN, Oprah's Oxygen Network, TLC, and The Knot TV. “In retrospect, it was ironic how it all transpired. To my family and friends, I am known as the vandal turned videographer.” And that suits him just fine.
In his free time you will find Justin zipping around the streets of San Francisco on his scooter looking for the next best eatery. His other hobbies include playing tennis in Golden Gate Park, rocking out on his guitar to his imaginary fans, and singing in the shower. During the winter season, Justin aspires to be a professional downhill Alpine skier. Look for him on the slopes of Whistler and Tahoe. He is also a huge Jack Johnson fan and hopes one day to meet the fine chap.
